Gastric Balloon

Intra-gastric balloon

The Intra Gastric Balloon or ‘Gastric Balloon’ is a soft, expandable device that is placed inside the stomach to reduce the feeling of hunger, control food intake and assist with behavioural changes relating to eating. This non-surgical procedure involves the insertion of a special ‘balloon’ via the mouth using a flexible camera. It is completely reversible and is removed in the same manner as it is administered.

Guided by a flexible camera (Endoscope), your Specialist will insert a tube containing the balloon into your stomach. Once in the correct position, the balloon is expanded with a sterile, saline fluid. This reduces the capacity of the stomach to hold food and thereby achieves the desired weight loss.

This simple weight loss procedure is considered to be minimally invasive and is usually performed in a Day Clinic. Placement of the gastric balloon generally takes only 20 minutes and it can safely stay in the stomach for a period up to 6 months.

On average, patients record weight loss of between 10 and 30kg within this timeframe.
