What is a gastric balloon?

Posted by on May 15, 2013 in FAQ

A gastric balloon is a soft, expandable weight-loss device. It is placed inside the stomach using a non-surgical procedure which involves the insertion of a balloon through the mouth. It is completely reversible and can be removed in the same way that it was inserted.

It works by:

  • Reducing the stomach’s capacity and thereby the volume of food it can physically hold,
  • This in turn decreases the feeling of hunger,
  • Helping a person to comfortably limit and better control their food intake, and
  • Assisting with the facilitation of new eating habits.

This simple weight loss procedure is considered to be minimally invasive because it does not involve surgery and requires only a visit to a Day Clinic. The procedure generally only takes around 20 minutes and the balloon device can remain safely in the stomach for up to 6 months. On average, patients record weight loss of between 10 and 30kg within this timeframe.
