What is a gastric band?

Posted by on May 15, 2013 in FAQ

A gastric band is an adjustable device used to treat patients suffering from obesity. The band itself is made from high quality medical silicon which is soft yet durable, so it’s comfortable and safe. It is inserted into the abdomen and involves a minimally invasive operation performed using the laparoscopic (keyhole) technique. The patient will require a general anaesthetic and the process of fitting the band take about one hour.

The band helps to achieve the desired weight loss by slowing the transit of food through the stomach. This limits the amount of food you are able to consume at one time and discourages overeating. The patient will feel full more quickly and for much longer periods of time.

With a gastric band and a new approach to eating, the average patient will lose 56% of their excess weight and maintain this result for at least 3 years.
